I wonder if this might be it? Dan I really admire your dedication to a small site, but from Sydney your home page has noticeable latency loading. I wouldn’t call it amazingly fast or anything; certainly AMP abominations feel way faster. Where’s it hosted?

https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ … isn't the same tool, but running it a few times on your website I got a bunch of timeouts (?), a few 100% scores, and one result that said >2s time-to-first-byte. Maybe there's something about Google's connection to your website?
