I'm one of four people I know of who fails interviews at a high enough rate that I could fail 20 in a row (and I believe I have). AFAICT, the only trait the four of us have in common is extreme nervousness in interviews.https://twitter.com/patio11/status/1058019605413748737 …

[raises hand] (I don't know that I get extremely nervous in interviews, but if you ask me something like "what's the toughest bug you ever encountered" I just draw a total blank.) (same phenomenon if you ask me to tell a joke, I simply won't be able to remember one on the spot)

I was at a party tonight and someone asked me what my favorite book was. Couldn't answer. They relaxed the constraint and asked about "a good book". Couldn't answer. They relaxed the constraint again and asked me about "any book, good or bad". Couldn't answer.

Do you think this is the nerves, or a separate fact about how you organize/recall information? I don't get nervous, but "name your favorite book" would give me trouble. Similarly, I recently was complaining to people about questions like "tell me about a time you failed"...

...not because I think I always do well, but just don't organize my experience into failure stories like that. Finally thought of a story, which I wrote down, and plan to study when I next do interviews. Will do the same for other behavioral interview questions I can think of.

I think nerves are generally a problem for me in software interviews, but for questions specifically like this, I think my problem is that I don't index information in a way that lets me easily answer that question (nerves were not an issue at this party, IMO).
