The problem is that in SW, scale is easier and therefore ppl treat it as a second order effect. At true scale, it's hugely important and most people under-estimate this unless they have been directly exposed (e.g., work at a FANG).

Scale effects are more obvious in semiconductors and traditional engineering. E.g., a cutting edge chip probably contains 10-20B vias. They must ALL work, despite statistical effects conspiring against you. That's an amazing achievement.

HN users drastically underestimate the difficulty of projects that are outside of their immediate domain - especially because Twitter and Facebook have to be exceedingly cautious about false positives, since those would bring even greater regulatory scrutiny.

Or, against the ideals of something like twitter, splitting up your usebase so they're not all in one giant channel. At some scale it becomes really difficult to moderate a forum without resorting to blind rule enforcement, at which point snr plummets.
-
Not just because there aren't enough people doing moderation, but because it is no longer tractable for people to keep up with most individuals in a community. Which affects the social feedback (self-moderation) as well as "this person is a habitual line-stepper" shared knowledge
