I think I've had at least five people tell me about "this great paper on benchmarking", only to link to that and I've also seen a couple of people cite it indirectly (in informal conversations, not papers), which is why I suspect it's the cause of the recent minimum trendiness.

I must admit, I don't know what the root cause is, or if there's a single cause. Sometimes ideas enter (or renter) the community's consciousness in ways, and for reasons, that are far above my pay grade!
