The median chip I worked on had more novel design than the P99-novel software project. We were able to set and hit schedules. Ditto for my optics work. Software isn't really unique (no, not even in the grandiosity of its practitioners).pic.twitter.com/GLLaoGSzY7

      Dan Luu Retweeted Hillel

The replies to https://twitter.com/hillelogram/status/1157810472692961281 … are interesting (not the top-level replies). Hillel says he'll interview engineers to see how software is different from "engineering" and people with (for example) no CivE knowledge drop in to explain how software is different from CivE.

      Dan Luu added,

      Hillel @hillelogram
Now that I scheduled a bunch of interviews and am making it a Real Thing, I wanna hype y'all on my new project: What makes software engineering different from 'traditional' kinds of engineering? Short request: pause and think about that for a few seconds before reading on.

Where do people get the confidence to say that their work is so uniquely novel that it's "something that has never been done before in the history of the universe", that the field is obviously totally different from another field they know nothing about, etc. ?

What? Computer programmers full of unwarranted self-esteem explaining things they know nothing about experts in the field?? Never hoid of such a thing.

The real funny thing about this is about 70% of interviewees are like "no, the software people completely misunderstand trad engineering" and the other 30% are "they're actually pretty dead-on." Even in the same engineering subfield! Man engineering is complicated

software scheduling I have experienced in my career has assumed at least one of the following: illness doesn't exist, no one will leave, dependencies will be fine, bugs don't exist, people don't get tired, technology won't change.

Alan Kay was really onto something when saying software is a pop culture. Applies as much on practices than the technologies

I'd guess this myth originates in an oversimplification: to build a bridge we need to engineer every part every time, while software (in theory) allows for abstracting commonalities once and for all so that new projects are all about what's novel.

I'd like to hear from @hillelogram about design reuse in trad engineering. We also could probe deeper the reasons why that "perfect abstraction" view has not happened, and maybe is unattainable.
