If you like debugging stories, the fsyncgate email thread is fun reading: https://danluu.com/fsyncgate/  It's a series of increasingly disturbing revelations, starting withpic.twitter.com/wpRog7Rlmn

another fun (though not directly related) thing: when you compare Windows tools written for the same purposes, the ones that directly parse the NTFS MFT (Everything, Wiztree) are orders of magnitude faster than the ones that use the OS APIs (Windows search, WinDirStat)

The mad thing is that we've known for ages that this stuff is a terrible, and people have all sorts of clever ideas for better implementations (eg https://lwn.net/Articles/354861/ … ), but it seems to be impossible to agree to do anything. File systems are the climate change of software!

In conclusion computers don’t work 😆 So database locally and serverless globally. But what systems do these companies feed the low level errors into and why is it not suitable for upstream?pic.twitter.com/YIo7WoVKRm

Seems to me the real problem is that "people" prioritize backward compatibility over EVERYTHING else --- absolutely everything. Google or whatever (certainly Apple) can redefine something stupid to match their needs. But eg mainstream Linux will not accept such changes...
