Really nice answer to the question "in layman's terms, what exactly does it mean to be transcendental? How would a transcendental number be different from an ordinary number, say 5": https://math.stackexchange.com/a/1686299/18947 pic.twitter.com/IbOdO1Yklj

A 2nd order interesting thing is that the comments & other answers illustrate what a hard time people have coming up with explanations in layman's terms even when explicitly asked to come up with an explanation in layman's terms.pic.twitter.com/sViwL1eZph

Stack Exchange is also designed to encourage this. The community likes it when you're precise but unhelpful and showers you with points.

If I remember right, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvmuCPvRoWQ … by @3blue1brown is good for that. It might have been a bit more complicated than the layman's terms used in this answer, though. (He released another version today, which I haven't seen yet but think probably is more complicated)

When I was learning math I thought of it in more constructivist terms. We make N by counting, Q by dividing and R through filling the “gaps”* b/w Q. Transc are in the gaps but we don’t have a good** way to describe them. See foot notes...

Gaps* - of course there aren’t really gaps like holes as rational numbers are dense and every gap has a rational number inside.
