This reminds me that I have a draft post where I read all the papers citing a handful of obviously bogus papers to see if any citations would mention the issues. Never published b/c I couldn't figure out how to write this without seeming like I was picking on particular papers.

Periodic reminder that many (most?) citations are bogus. Do you think there is a way that as a society we can prevent these kinds of wrong notions from spreading? I sometimes think we need a “here’s what the science actually says” website, that has a staff that converts science into knowledge/advice for everyone.

There are a few Big Questions of Our Time and I believe this is one of them. Which is why I fear that the solution (if any exists) will only be apparent in hindsight.

I once geeked out on checking the citations in the AAP’s report on bed sharing. If I remembee correctly, there were 2-3 that actually supported the claims they were attached to.
