My employers have always advised me to avoid reading patents since knowingly infringing on patents results in 3x damages. This may not be relevant if you're messing around on personal projects.
ah, I didn't know that part. I will most certainly not be turning this into some kind of commercial IP core, which likely confines it to being a personal project, yes.
In my experience that advice is common in some bigcorps but it is kind of cargo cultish, and also not relevant in many cases where 1x or 3x both mean the end of your project. I've worked on royalty free projects where we absolutely did our due diligence.
