Am I the only person who thinks that the fact that so many people with track records fail FizzBuzz is more likely to be a a strike against FizzBuzz than an endorsement? There's another HN hiring thread and ofc. it's full of people warning others about "fake" programmers.pic.twitter.com/6jfLKKziRh

One of the best engineers I've ever worked with has never passed a "real" interview. He gets so nervous when ordering fast food that he has to repeat his order in his head when he's in line, otherwise he'll freeze up when it's his turn to order. Interviews are even worse for him

He's only changed jobs once in a 15 year career (when a bunch of his co-workers changed companies and were able to hire him w/o a "real" interview) and has failed every other interview. He got his first job after an internship with no "real" interview.

I tried to get him hired at two places I've worked, but ofc. he failed the interviews. I wouldn't be surprised if, somewhere, someone is telling a story like those HN comments, about how they managed to keep out this "fake" programmer with 15 years of experience on his resume.

I'm going to be direct: it is possible there are people who interview really really insanely badly but are great, but I cannot effectively distinguish them from charlatans, and making a hiring mistake is expensive.

Then a lot of value can be generated by making hiring mistakes cheaper.

Hey Dan - in case it is useful - I’ve been interviewing a bunch of people and have recently gone into technical interview coaching (with my friend @staycalmcomic). Being a candidate is a skill in itself and I’d be happy to talk with your ex-colleague.

It sounds like this guy would have no problem at all with the FizzBuzz problem under the right social conditions. So maybe the content isn’t the problem, but the setting is.

The problem is coding on an interview rather than fizzbuzz specifically, right?

I somewhat agree with you because I get panic attacks in interviews. However, on the other hand, it wouldn't cause me to fail at something that simple. It ruins my working memory and causes problems writing algorithmic code with lots of moving indexes and loops/recursion.

I don't understand your example. You say "strike against FizzBuzz" and then describe someone who should do BETTER - or at least, equally bad - on FizzBuzz than on a regular interview.

This is a story about engeneer that really needs professional help to deal with anxiety, and not a story that supports a notion of FizzBuzz being a bad interview question.
