I've never understood is why Tesla gets a pass on their equivalent vehicles (e.g., X P100D, 5500 lbs, 0-60 in 2.7s). Sure, the greenhouse gas emissions are lower, but most of the energy expenditure still comes from non-renewable resources and there's also battery disposal.
One reason is that high-performance gas-powered cars tend to get poor consumption even when not using the high-performance, while high-performance electric doesn't have the same problem to the same extent.
There's some extra weight (bigger battery, second motor, etc) in the electric. I don't have good data on this, but it does seem like 'performance' ICE cars have come with better everyday efficiency over time.
For example, compare base Jeep Grand Cherokee (19/26 mpg) with TrackHawk (11/17 mpg). Big difference. Model X 90D (90/94 mpg-e) vs P100D (81/92 mpg-e). Much less difference. Obviously EPA cycles and mpg-e have their issues, but small for this use.
The question I'd personally have if I was considering a "big" (in physical size) vehicle purchase (and wanted to optimize for resource usage) would be something like, if you compare an X to an Accord, what's the delta in resource usage?
The X probably has lower emissions and maybe burns less fuel when you account for the total energy cycle. But it's also much heavier and took more resources to create, and we don't currently have a good way to recycling parts of the battery AFAIK, so we're using up Li.
Do these cancel out or is one of these "better"? I haven't tried to figure this out because I think this is a really non-trivial calculation, but I guess I find it weird that people (most that I know) just assume the Tesla is better w.r.t to this. I don't think that's obvious?
It's a decidedly non-trivial calculation, and even depends on opinions like whether you think Hydro is green or not. That might be personally the right question, but the broader question is what people will buy. Equivalent-sized electric is an easier sell than downsizing.
