One thing I liked Uber was that, unlike cabs, they won't regularly refuse to take you to "bad" neighborhoods, but this new policy seems like a reversal -- they'll now ban riders who regularly take trips to bad neighborhoods. https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/29/uber-will-start-deactivating-riders-with-low-ratings/ …pic.twitter.com/BkolzWTHF0

This policy protects drivers from harassment and shitty behavior. Wherever the cutoff is for low ratings, it will almost certainly not be set in a manner that bans clients from entire neighborhoods.

This is such a bad way to do that that it's hard to believe that can be the goal. Harassing a driver has the same weight as making a a driver go to a bad neighborhood or having crutches or having a wheelchair, etc. If you want to stop harassment, ban harassers directly.

This goes for the flip side too, removing bad drivers, too. I once saw a driver almost kill a cyclist, and then get mad at them and drive dangerously close so they could roll their window down and yell at them. Giving them a "1" has the same weight as any other "1".

If that driver does this 1 in 50 rides, they can have a great rating. A rating system that uses the average cannot address "outlier" problems and the idea that one would be used to do so is so implausible that it's prima facie absurd that Uber would implement one with that intent

On the rider side, Uber asks drivers to tag their rating for scores below 5. Many things go into a driver ban, including support requests, cancellations, and telematics (which can detect reckless driving).

I find this to be the opposite of convincing. Most of the very highly rated drivers I've had drive incredibly recklessly. Just had a 4.9+ star driver pass in the oncoming traffic lane on a blind hill crest. People love reckless drivers since they're fast.

I think this conversation is premised on a familiarity with properties of data we don't have and assumptions about behavior you haven't observed. It also assumes a far more naive mechanism for bans than what is actually implemented on the rider side.

If average rating isn't that important, perhaps the "Uber Head of Safety and Brand Initiatives" shouldn't have emphasized it in their statement? I literally don't understand what the first half of your message means, unless you mean that some 1s are weighted extra.
