One thing I liked Uber was that, unlike cabs, they won't regularly refuse to take you to "bad" neighborhoods, but this new policy seems like a reversal -- they'll now ban riders who regularly take trips to bad neighborhoods. https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/29/uber-will-start-deactivating-riders-with-low-ratings/ …pic.twitter.com/BkolzWTHF0

Also - sorry I know I'm changing the topic - this is a clear example of how a 5 star rating system is complete nonsense. Banning 4.6 and below? If you got 4.6/5 on a school assignment that's an A. My solution to this is simple: binary feedback. It's either neutral, or positive

Completely agree, Andy. Arbitrary scoring makes no sense in the scheme. If anything, it's creating a culture of fear for the drivers. I regularly get asked to just rate 5 stars by lyft and uber drivers.

I’m not sure why this matters if the intention is to target outliers. The average of either rating system is still continuous, and where you lie on the distribution is likely unaffected.

This injects extra noise into the system. On the HN comments for this, plenty of people say they'll give a decent ride 3 stars because that's the "right" way to rate. The fact that you can usually average this out doesn't mean that noise has no effect.

An alternate rating system that has the exact properties you describe is: 60% of the time, the driver gets the rating you give, 40% of the time, it's inverted. Sure, that can work, but I don't think being able to average out the impact of noise is a particularly strong defense.
