One thing I liked Uber was that, unlike cabs, they won't regularly refuse to take you to "bad" neighborhoods, but this new policy seems like a reversal -- they'll now ban riders who regularly take trips to bad neighborhoods. https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/29/uber-will-start-deactivating-riders-with-low-ratings/ …pic.twitter.com/BkolzWTHF0

I used to live in a "bad" neighborhood and had a low Uber rating as a result of taking Ubers there (rating improved after I moved). Anecdotally, other things that reduce people's rating and will get them banned are being disabled and having a wheelchair and traveling with kids.

How awesome that we get to re-litigate the same civil rights issues every time techbros write another few lines of code. Bless the free market.

It’s not like this had been solved properly with cabs either. They could just “not see” you if it looked like you weren’t the kind of person they wanted. I’m white and male, but sometimes I want to go to the NYC airport in mid afternoon, so I got a glimpse of this myself.

I wonder how this will work for tourists. In my home city Uber drivers either give 4 stars or 1 star to people, so my rating is 4.4. Will Uber refuse to let me use their app in other cities with higher averages?

You're making assumptions about their threshold and that they'll only look at numerical review and ignore content.

I’m sure they will create an algo that takes into account an adversity score, just like the college board is doing with SAT scores.

Perhaps this is me being naive, but why would your rating be impacted due to where you were picked up or dropped off? It should be based how the rider was *during* their trip, right? I’m not going to ding a driver because of his home address.
