      I hear people say that shorter lines = better, but when I check the primary sources, I find that they have no primary source or that longer lines are arguably better.       If you actually read the sources from the "well sourced" wikipedia page, you'll find that it's common that the longest line length tested = the highest reading speed.       (I don't have a source handy, but this is something I learned in my college courses on book design & typesetting, and it cropped up in... some LaTeX manual or another as well--the trope goes back a while.)

      There's a study from 1929 that's often referenced directly, or indirectly if you follow the chain of references all the way back. AFAICT, modern studies have not reproduced the result (10 pt. font, 3" lines optimal), but it keeps getting referenced.

      Another funny thing is that people reference this study to support short lines, but they don't argue for 10 pt. font, nor do they argue that lines should be 3" long (obviously ridiculously short, IMO). So even the people who reference this study don't seem to believe it?

      Are you telling me that this site is not ridiculous? Are *you* kidding? Way too serious response: If I click on a tweet, on my laptop screen with default browser & OS settings, I have 4.25" wide lines, ~18 point font

          To get a meaningful comparison, we should probably be adjusting for viewing distance -- I hold my phone a bit closer than i do a book; my laptop screen is considerably father away
