I tried to understand the stats part, then I realized I'm missing one or two classes on it.

If you want a gentle, but practical, primer on stats, Statistical Rethinking is pretty good: https://xcelab.net/rm/statistical-rethinking/ …

sidenote: "ELO hell" is less about teammates with bad mechanics and more about them being garbage human beings The difference between 1850 and 2050 is *very* noticeable, judging by the number of people throwing, saying abusive or bigoted things in chat, or refusing to join chat
-
Not only is this noticeable in practice, but it's explained by the theory, too: placement matches for a fresh account start at a virtual SR of 2500, so many people place higher in initial rank for their first season, then fall to their equilibrium after that

Interesting! For what it's worth, I'd think of the lack of voice chat participation as a "threat to validity" rather than as "experimental minutiae", unless the purpose of the experiment was to only investigate the effect of name choice.

This is on American servers? Seems like the general culture differs a bit between at least the EU and the AM regions (not that any has less toxicness)

Do another version of this except use voice chat. I think the only way to do a decent control of this is to have a standard greeting you say at the beginning of the game to your team. Then have a male voice say that greeting in one set of games and then a female voice say it.
