I wonder how many people were convinced to avoid engineering and CS by these doom and gloom essays that were popular from the 90s until 2010-ish: https://web.archive.org/web/20070314160651/http://www.halfsigma.com/2007/03/why_a_career_in.html …pic.twitter.com/5uWlm0SPw2

In early 2000s, the supposedly savvy thing to do was to take your engineering undergrad degree and go into IP law, betting on the derivative rather than the underlying, for job security and wealth.

My classmates (UIUC '02) who did that are *probably* partners by now, but I bet I had a lot more fun and still have a lot more option value.

Did you keep in touch with them? My understanding is that something like 10% -20% of incoming lawyers at BigLaw firms will make partner, with similar numbers (perhaps lower) for IBanking and consulting. This is the main part of the anti-tech argument that I never understood.

Law firms had and still have a tournament structure where the vast majority of entrants lose. Even if tech comp hadn't reached the absurd levels it has today and high-law hadn't tanked (as evidenced by comp, Dewey & LeBoeuf, etc.), tech would've been a better median bet.

It's arguably surprising that, at the high end (p99 and p999, not billionaire level), tech seems to be at least as good as law, but I don't think it's surprising that a person who wants a "normal" 30-45 hour a week job can get by more easily in tech than in law.

Just did some LinkedIn spying, and of the ~55 fellow alumni I'm connected to, ~40 were engineers/technical. 3 went into law, and 1 is a partner. 1 went into finance and is a managing director somewhere fancy. The other ~36 are still technical(ish).
