Apparently, in 2008, Sun made the environmental study of their workforce, and figured 98% of carbon footprint is commuting to/from office. Next time any company boasts environmental friendliness, see if they are able, willing, and encouraging remote work for at least some people.

Looks like it; the paper mentions energy savings from avoiding commute are 5.5-6.8 MWh/yr. This seems to be in ballpark for energy spend for heating the average apartment in Europe (bulk of energy budget) -- so, cutting down on commute cuts the personal footprint considerably.
