The EU fined Google ~$5B for anti-competitive Android/search behavior. A Google employee and lawyer (not Google counsel, not speaking on behalf of Google) says Google's real crime was being too open: http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-4581_en.htm … https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17559985 …pic.twitter.com/bbLYZzXD4g

As a mere lay person, I don't understand why the openness is the problem? Didn't MS get in trouble without being open? It seems to me that things like preventing DDG/Bing from being used are the problem; one could have an open platform that doesn't do the shady stuff Google doespic.twitter.com/uKlCFuUYvA

BTW, I don't really mean legally. I don't understand why Google's reputation is fine-to-good when MS's reputation in the 90s/00s was garbage. They both seem to throw their weight around in the same way. If anything, Google seems to do it more?pic.twitter.com/3qJ3LCk7h5

Perhaps because things have devolved into a Google vs Apple grudge match, and many people dislike Apple?

Also, this may be lack of memory, but I feel like Google still does more amazing but financially irrelevant stuff that we nerds like (AlphaGo, etc).

Anti-Google sentiments are becoming more common but wide-spride cultural absolutes like that take a while to shift.

I think Google was pretty careful with PR messages and overall attitude -- like, this message "don't you see how open and friendly we are?", while opening some unrelated stuff and keeping core part tightly closed. it could be that google services are free and MS you buy yourself

Anyone - particularly devs - who think highly of Google are fucking high. It's a terrible company pairing shoddy engineering with oversold machine learning all in the name of serving ads and that is the ONLY purpose the company has. Period. Fuck Google.

And as a footnote, Android is poorly designed and implemented garbage too, and they're 8 versions into trying to build that piece of shit into something that kind of works. While Apple and iOS have no shortage of problems, they're fundamentally a competent platform.

reasonable doubt as to how much choice you have in the websites you can visit? windows being on every machine meant a lot of influence, and little choice, the web browser bundling & eu stuff was based on that framing
