I found the list of advertises who've showed me targeted ads, and it doesn't make sense even (or perhaps especially) if you assume the inferences are correct. Potentially enough of the latter that the former are just statistical coincidences, I wonder?
Yeah, the things that are correct are true of many people (uses a credit card, doesn't have children) and there are many of those guesses that are also incorrect. All of the "specific" guesses (tax refund vacationer, RV) are wrong. It's not clear if it's better than chance.
Wouldn’t the non-clicking events eventually lead to better targeted ads? Or is the marginal cost of zero mean that they just don’t care?
I think this stuff is getting better in a way that's measurable in aggregate, but the services I've used for 10 years still mostly have nonsensical inferences for me as a user.
The pricing model for data usage encourages peppering you with tons of categories. I wish I could tell you the difference between the segment data above and the stuff smart buyers actually use.
Maybe we can hope that the error bars on these inferences will always be huge because humans just don't generate enough visible data points to tighten them?
