People say you should work at startups because that's where the interesting work (and money) is. That's backwards! http://danluu.com/startup-tradeoffs/ …

I suspect I'll never write anything more impactful than this post. I've had a double digit number of people tell me they made life-changing amounts of money as a result of reading this post. What fraction of people who change jobs because of this post tell me? Probably < 1%?

Naturally, the responses I got to this were (in exonentially. decreasing order of frequency): 1. That's BS. No one makes that much {outside SF|writing code|at all} 2. Duh. Everyone already knows this, why write it up? 3. I agree. Glad word is getting out 4. This changed my life

P90 seems pretty good. In 2015 they’d funded 940 total startups. Most of the top 100 startups today are pre-2015; #100 is HelloSign which was acquired for 230m. https://www.ycombinator.com/topcompanies/

It looks like you just graduated? Is that right? The easiest path for someone in school is probably internship interview -> internship -> FT job. Without an internship, the next easiest common path is probably campus career fair -> interview -> job.

I've seen similar figures on Hacker News. The change for me has been when younger people ask me what they should do. I respond with "probably work for a large tech company" now. As for me, I still dream of reaching the limits of autonomy. Don't see that as possible working at MS

You might be able to reduce the "1" replies by qualifying "big company" a bit more. Where I work (mentioned in footnote 3) does not pay those rates but is undoubtedly a "big company". My initial reaction was "this is BS" until I saw the footnote.

My guess is that for #1, these are ppl who are poor negotiators && don't realize/believe that other people hit these numbers. It hurts to know you've been getting shortchanged
