Number of NBA players: ~430 Number of people in my Google orientation class in 2013: 100-200 That was one week of hires for Mountain View plus some of the offices too tiny to have their own orientation, and I believe they're hiring more now than they were at the time.

From the first comment in this thread, I believe the relevant population is programmers at YC startups. What fraction of those folks *couldn't* get a job at one of Google/FB/Amazon/Netflix or a finance shop that pays equivalently or better? My guess is less than half?
