it's the trap that destroyed America. the last era ended in the crash of 2008 and we still haven't really cleaned up the mess. the entire way we organize our society was based on the hallucinated "wealth" of home ownership which was just another iteration of debtor culture.

the underwater mortgage, where you can't afford to sell the house (it would bankrupt you) and you can't afford to pay for the mortgage (the house was overvalued, the payments are too). that's a form of serfdom. bound to the land by your debts.
