Second time today I've heard someone say that Hacker News is terrible. At first glance it seems pretty normal? What's the deal? https://twitter.com/wawilsoniv/status/998582231537987584 …

extremely opaque and uneven moderation policy. extremely insular and groupthinky user culture.

Doesn't seem like the kind of issues that typically lead to ritualistic disclaimers to me.

loss of prestige relative to past years. there was a time when hacker news was really an important hub in that community and it has declined in relative stature.

Well neither is that. "X is terrible, but..." usually is for political or moral reasons ime

insularity and groupthink are both political/moral failures in my opinion.

It should be, but mostly it seems to depend on the direction of the groupthink.

I just mean that people tend to not mind groupthink if they agree with it.

ok I see what you mean. yes, factionalism doesn't create discord if the community is sufficiently insular (until an outsider tries to enter, anyway, can get ugly then). still a moral failure though. insularity is a thought prison.
