imagine if people behaved this way while walking: you're on a path and there's a bunch of people in front of you. someone further up the path stops and you don't know why (can't see that far ahead). so everyone behind them stops too.

then you yell "HEY FUCK YOU MOVE!" at the top of your of lungs right into the ear of the guy in front of you. then he yells "FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU" at the guy in front of him, and so on. within seconds the entire column of people is screaming at each other.

I thought people were meaner online because they couldn't be physically threatened. But it could be that social norms go out the window in any different context, IRL or otherwise

some of that must apply to driving too. people feel similarly anonymous and protected from social consequences in their cars.

You're right. It's not the physical threat (you can still be physically threatened by other cars) as much as reputational harm that seems to make people nicer

not nicer. more decorous and restrained. they do all their mean bastardry in private.
