you're probably right but it's an interesting difference from the institution of monogamy in the ancient world (where it wasn't a universal baseline assumption). for example, the early Christians promoted monogamy as a gigantic improvement in women's rights and station.
traditional patriarchal marriage with women as second-class partners is clearly harmful (especially to women, but also men, in a different sense) though so we do need something better. equal-partner marriage is better but we don't have institutional enforcement of it.
