When talking to Americans I’m used to having to explain Singapore’s weirdness re: drugs, caning, etc But now I gotta ask, how can a country call itself the Land Of The Free when so many of its citizens are in such crushing debt?

I feel myself recalibrating my mental model of America by the minute here. I have a lot of sympathy for everybody in debt - I know firsthand how it crushes you psychologically, turns people cruel and abrasive, etc. But also simultaneously I’m losing respect for “The American Way”
