I think an enormous amount of it is the ideological filter bubbles in action. inside the bubble they see that degree of strident vindictiveness as a show of strength. outside the bubble it is a very obvious sign of profound weakness and insecurity.

*Denying* mercy, empathy, etc. to and feeling like you are inflicting cruelty on Bad People is such a drug hit that it helps them avoid noticing.
-
wtf goes wrong in your life that cruelty gets you high?
-
I'm pretty sure it's actually the baseline human experience.
-
it's not. I wouldn't deny that the capacity for it exists in everyone, but it's not switched on by default. if it was we wouldn't have a functioning society. that's why this shit is concerning. if everyone adopted the same norms as those we'd devolve into a gang war within days
-
The way society functions is by expanding the sphere of who deserves empathy and shrinking the sphere of who deserves cruelty.} But consider the majority feeling about, say, criminals, and concern for their welfare in prison.
-
yeah, and that's where the category slip is revealed. that woman is showing the same attitude towards this guy, who spoke some hateful words, that the majority shows to violent criminal convicts. dangerous precedent.
