1. Argument from hypocrisy mostly just ends up justifying continued bad behavior (not accusing ort of this). 2. The framing of sides / disarmament isn't quite appropriate because the sides don't really have leadership that can make decisions and create accountability.

To expand on 2: no one can make your side collectively "disarm". However, as an individual, it is *good* for you to "disarm" from doing bad things.

It's not a classic prisoner's dilemma. It has many players and vicarious offense. It's essentially impossible to punish any specific offender, you simply punish "the side" (in this case, you aren't even punishing them, you're punishing someone they sort-of-care about) ...

... but as I mentioned, "the side" has no leadership or accountability. So punishment has no real disincentive effect, and in fact it generally just incites more retaliation.

Oh, and as a matter of rhetorical effectiveness, I think few people really appreciate how far you'll get with most people by appearing to be a nice person who appreciates them and tries not to be a jerk.

if we're telling evolutionary just-so stories then maybe the ecstatic rush is a vestige of predatory instincts? "awww yisss just killed me some dinner" but the current year social environment is so fucked up that we're preying upon ourselves. social group auto-cannibalism.
