reading dozens of books that pervasively flatter you in ways you don't notice (because everything you read does it) can, if you get real used to it, cause you to become shocked and angered by exposure to books that unaccountably fail to flatter you
I think the issue is when someone never has that realization that it *is* pulp crap because they've never been exposed to anything greater. These are the people who yell about "DONT PUT POLITICS IN MUH SCIFI", can't understand gender metaphors, sort of thing.
