you either have an inordinately large NRx follower base or they didn't really think it through. Maybe people should be reminded about the endless religious wars, church inquisition, and an economy on the brink of starvation on every odd numbered year.
the 15th century was the early modern period? could stretch and call that early or proto Renaissance maybe. also, the Crusades were wars of religion too.

The Crusades were brutal (esp. the first Crusade) but they were child's play compared to the Thirty Years' War. And this is not even mentioning the wars of the 20th cent.

Spanish Inquisition was active from 1478 to 1834. This is contemporaneous with the Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment.
