Deconstruction implies beginning from the position itself, understood sufficiently and without prejudice, and then examining it in successive levels of detail until previously unnoticed core assumptions are revealed. that's not what Newman was doing.

I make this distinction because Deconstruction can also discredit and eviscerate an argument (if the argument is flimsy and susceptible to deconstructive critiques), but it's a technique that is typically made in good faith as an academic exercise.

whereas deliberate misrepresentation of ideas is not deconstruction, it's just a crude rhetorical bait and switch.
