Elephants are majestic, intelligent animals who deserve protection as an important part of the natural world. On the other hand, when they get overpopulous, they are essentially giant rats who will spoil what they do not eat when they get into cropland.
So they have to be culled. If rich idiots want to pay thousands of dollars and employ lots of people who live in rural Africa to do the work that needs to be done anyway, I suggest that we all hold our collective noses and let them do it.
How was population control handled in the Pleistocene? Surely there were predators, or--?
Agriculture was just getting started right at the end of the Pleistocene, but a group of humans of that era would not have had too much trouble killing elephants if they needed to.
