High school kids should not be expected to read Dickinson. The language and setting are both too unfamiliar to be meaningful, esp. when they could be reading more relevant and contemporary fiction.

while we're here, seriously questioning the wisdom of having 13 year olds try to read Shakespear. it's incomprehensible without STRONG language skills (developed from years of reading), and a boatload of historical knowledge of both Elizbethan England and they plays' settings.
