Are "Post Unpopular Opinions" threads about: - finding the walls of your echo chamber? - encouraging naive outgroup members to expose themselves? - providing a formal justification to make ingroup-divergent claims, thus asserting your status if your thread is seen as legitimate?

are we doing honorary Hansonian signalling analysis now that he's been dragged for posting an unpopular opinion (more a musing than an opinion, really)?

invoking Hanson explicitly wasn't my intent, I just saw a "Post Unpopular Opinions" Facebook post by a very social-justice-oriented acquaintance and wondered what their motive might have been

yeah, dunno. I always viewed threads like that to be forms of public self-immolation mostly. they're often very interesting but in so many internet social contexts the risk:reward ratio is beyond the pale awful. I wouldn't necessarily assume ulterior motive though.

I guess if its on a highly anonymous alt it might really be a good form of venting, or testing the waters. on a candid account (and I assume the FB post was candid) it just seems like the social media equivalent of pain-for-pleasure.
