Everything about the caste system makes me so angry

From the outside it's baffling that it persists. Tragic

I don’t mean to be patronizing, but I am surprised you are surprised.

Yeah, fair. It just seems so arbitrary

Another surprising statement. It's no more arbitrary than any other non-immediate-familial association. It just looks that way because it's not one you're familiar with.

Bingo. Path dependence again. It's important in many ways to know how we got somewhere, but it's more important to know where we are. It doesn't matter that it seems arbitrary to outsiders. What it is is a clan/kin sorting power structure.

People always think I'm racist when I say things like this, but it's not racism. It's cultural distinction. A "country" made up of constantly bickering clans who can't ever really come together is not a nation. It's an arbitrary grouping of clans.

One of the things that is the most horrifying about the current situation in America is that we are seeing the breakdown of that "nation" culture. It wanes and waxes, always, but this is an alarming and unusually low point, and the trend is troubling.

constitutional crisis. national culture makes less sense and less impact than other affiliations (corporate, kinship, religious, partisan) when the voting system is so obviously malfunctioning and the government so obviously non-representative.
