this (distressingly common) expression of PoMo is the conflation of language with reality. It's a deeply rooted map/territory confusion and is a natural consequence of investing your entire system of self-worth into the critical reception of wordy essays.
-
however, this is really just a kind of hypertrophy of something inherent in language already. having a symbol-manipulating mind at all means that "magic" is a fundamental component of reality. spells is just spelling. grimoire is just grammar. really, same word roots.

No, I meant the phenomenon of scapegoating language "spells" for disproportionate harmful effects (roughly similar though not equivalent to the original PIE word for "bear" disappearing due to taboos).
-
what was the PIE ancestor word for bear?
-
Probably similar to Sanskrit version, since the root only got replaced in the Northern countries where there are lots of bears http://www.charlierussellbears.com/LinguisticArchaeology.html …
-
Bearly.
