So logically, the “rest of America” must be united by a beautiful solidarity and converging on a true sense of American identity, while separated by walls of self-effacement and self-deprecating other-regard?

"walls of self-effacement and self-deprecating other-regard" sounds like a reasonably accurate description of blue tribe zeitgeist in current year

It’s neoromanticism/noble savage all over again. “Where did we go wrong understanding the virtues of Noble Hillbilly?” “Get in touch with the Real America” is the new “get in touch with our Paleolithic past”

I can only hope you’re right. I’ve been called “coastal elite” and I definitely don’t feel like it.

You spend a lot of time writing for advanced degree holding audiences and consulting for capital-owner class members (or their upper management allies). why don't you feel elite?

There’s a lot of people who fit that profile. I think the term is best used for people who have a shot at clambering brazenly above the law and getting away with it. When nobody is supposed to be above the law, ‘elite‘ is measured by the brazen criminality you can get away with
