So logically, the “rest of America” must be united by a beautiful solidarity and converging on a true sense of American identity, while separated by walls of self-effacement and self-deprecating other-regard?

"walls of self-effacement and self-deprecating other-regard" sounds like a reasonably accurate description of blue tribe zeitgeist in current year

It’s neoromanticism/noble savage all over again. “Where did we go wrong understanding the virtues of Noble Hillbilly?” “Get in touch with the Real America” is the new “get in touch with our Paleolithic past”

Second reply was to Dan. I do think though that the Fox narrative has successfully cast the entire blue, coastal half as “elites” and “ruling class” in a way that has not been counterprogrammed

too far of a leap on your part imo. Fox talks about the blue elite class endlessly, and the blue underclass a little, and very rarely talks about the blue tribe majority bourgeoisie. maybe Fox viewers conflate the majority with the elites. I'm not convinced.

if the conflation is made though, it has a basis in truth. there's tremendous herd behavior because the blue culture bubble is ruthless and efficient.
