*knew a lot of men I'm an adult now and have control over my social affiliations. this was a feature of my childhood more than my present.

Gayyyy ;) (Anecdotal) My friends and family (male and female, gay and straight) use "gay" to refer to something "not cool", or something they disagree with. eg: "HipHop is gay" - translation; "I don't like HipHop." Nothing to do with "acceptable male identity", for us at least

and what about when they call a man "gay" because they think he isn't cool? examine this a little deeper. why did they even start using that slang in the first place?

I have examined it deeper; I just disagree :) Certainly started as a derogatory remark, but language and meanings change, over time. My point is that it is used just as frequently regardless of gender/sexuality. It isn't used to emasculate; if anything, it's a term of endearment
