I think whether you think Facebook is net public good or net public bad depends mostly on whether or not you belong to one or more good secret groups. The non-secret value prop of FB is borderline.

there are no good modern forums. Discourse seemed like it was getting there, but I don't think it has the legs to serve as a real FB substitute. And the minimum feature threshold now is quite high. Usenet UX won't cut it.

well I won't for a second try to argue that there are any forums with good UI. still, I wonder how important that really is? if FB disappeared tomorrow and we all went back to phpBB (or similar) it wouldn't phase most private groups.
