I'm not sure it's properly an anti-pattern. There's ... a sort of vague structure to which a lot of workflows converge, and excel is among least imperfect of its representations. "There is a secret song at the center of the world..." ;-)

I guess what I had in mind as the anti-pattern is "management has allocated X million bucks for you to develop worse-Excel as a proprietary vendor solution", which is common enough that it's fueled my career for a decade.

internally we spend a lot of time trying to not be worse-Excel and build something actually new and good. sometimes it even works!
