ease of use. setting up your own git repository host is annoying enough that using a SaaS platform for it makes sense for most people. they built in a lot of social features and publishing features too which is value-add for many users.

git in particular is a VCS that's particularly well-suited for open source projects (it was designed to manage the Linux codebase, originally), and open source projects have become popular enough that having a SaaS oriented towards hosting their code was good business.
