if the learning effect is about the same then how are they even alt? don't they necessarily need to be teaching different things to be meaningfully alternative?

I suppose that's a big part of it. But to use the example a lot of people are probably thinking of: coding bootcamps really do have a dramatically different curiculum than CompSci bachelors degree.
