etymologically metaphor can be translated literally as something close to "carry across" in the literary sense it's either narrowly "a comparison using _is_ rather than _like_" or broadly it's the entire category of figurative language linking things by shared traits.

in the sense I'm interested in, the literal translation "carry across" is very salient. I'm interested in language that is skillfully chosen to transfer ideas from one mind to another mind as compactly and efficiently as possible.
