would it help to know that the profiles are not nearly as accurate as their salesfolk claim and that in general the folks behind it are not super competent

I assume that every system ever built is filled with mediocrity, shlock, and under-delivered features. That doesn't change the nature of the thing. It's cold comfort to know that it's a typically mediocre version of a panopticon rather than a peerless one.

the issue, from my perspective, is the size and centralization of FB specifically. I wouldn't be nearly as concerned if there were instead 1000 networks of ~1 million people rather than 1 network of ~1 billion people.

yeah, that's what i was primarily objecting to. there's a confirmation bias in play where the stuff on the far right end of the accuracy bell curve get held up as 'amazing predictions' and the wildly off stuff doesn't get as many hot clicks
