Saw a talk a few years ago where James Lovelock basically convinced me utterly that next-gen fission power and the right kind of geo-engineering are the only really hope of not completely fucking ourselves.

Lovelock has not suppressed his religious impulses. He's a Quaker (sorta, close enough) and I think that counts for a lot. He doesn't have to perform ritual self-flagellation for social status.
