he seems to have latched onto the trend of some companies to over-value hobbyist work. I think that's semi-mythological also and is something represented far more in media articles about tech jobs than anything I've seen in the workplace though, but n=1 anecdata so who knows.

not that different than colleges caring that you have extra-curriculars. they also want to see you're a well-rounded person

that's been my experience. my job interviews usually involve talking about past professional work AND hobby work. the hobby work is considered interesting/relevant even if it's not actually programming.
