Rebelling against what? No one has any authority over what I believe or practice. That's totally my decision. There's nothing to rebel against.

I don't view everyone as my peer. In this case I think it's likely I know something that you and Shaun don't know, and thus in this way I don't view you as my peer. In many other ways I do, and I won't immediately dismiss what you say, thinking that in all ways I am superior.

When someone comes on retreat with me I assume they want to learn something from me and the structure I'm helping craft. I don't hand over the teachers seat to them or let them start running the show, especially when I see their delusions.

That said, when I start hearing deep wisdom from someone, that opens me up, I let go of control and go with what realities is teaching through us (that's my practice anyway). And then when I sense things are going off the rails I intervene. I absolutely exercise authority.

when someone goes on retreat with you they have voluntarily delegated their own power to you, empowering and authorizing you to intervene on their behalf. it's a temporary arrangement, no? You don't claim to maintain this authority after the retreat ends.

Only if we're in an ongoing student-teacher relationship.

Do I view people as being inherently equal, yes. They are peers in that most fundamental sense. Do I view and treat people as being peers in contexts in which they clearly are not. No, no way. I think a tremendous amount of harm comes from confusing these two meanings of 'peer'.

Of a kind anyway. It can go badly off the rails in the wrong circumstances (see: Christy McNally) but even in less extreme situations those dynamics are present in every congregation/sangha, aren't they?
