I think it's possible to be an other-directed introvert or a self-directed extrovert.

I don't think I understand
@Aelkus's idea clearly enough to say whether personality type is orthogonal from socialization level. My gut feeling is that the two are somewhat distinct but highly correlated. -
If we're willing to accept that personality type is prior to socialization, then we have positive feedback loops: an introvert would intrinsically feel less need to socialize, thus tending to become under-socialized, thus feeding into their self-perception as an introvert.
